Burak Kocer, PhD International Associate, Aspen Family Business Group

Burak is the head of Corporate Governance Desk of Ünsal Gündüz Attorneys at Law, a full service law firm based in Istanbul. In this role, he has assisted a number of family businesses in developing their family constitutions and moderated meetings to implement their governance models. He is also advising corporate clients on governance-related matters, including development of company and group level governance policies and structures, board performance evaluation, annual planning of board and committee tasks and governance-related public disclosures.

In addition to his advisory assignments, Burak is also an independent board member at Bosch Fren, a Robert Bosch Group subsidiary listed in Istanbul, and Federal-Mogul Izmit, a Turkish American joint venture listed in Istanbul.

Graduated from Istanbul University, Faculty of Business Administration in 1998, Burak completed his MBA at Ball State University Miller College of Business in 2000. He received his PhD from Istanbul University in 2005 with his dissertation on board structure and functions at listed companies. He began his career as a research assistant at Istanbul University in 1998 and then worked as a teaching assistant at Istanbul Bilgi University, where he taught perspectives on management, organizational behavior and human resource management courses from 2001 and 2004.

Burak is a member of Corporate Governance Association of Turkey, Corporate Governance Working Group at Turkish Industrialists’ and Businessmen’s Association.

Donnel Nunes, PVA Consulting

Donnel is a behavior and social learning specialist who brings more than 15 years of experience to his work with families in business. His focus is facilitating engagements that present opportunities for clients to strengthen their ability to share and receive knowledge. With ongoing consideration for the client’s zone of proximal development, he designs and orchestrates interactions where learning goals are targeted and within reach of individuals and teams. Donnel helps families in business to build the capacity to lean into discomfort and conflict, accept the past, and renew the potential for the future.

As Donnel’s clients broaden their skills related to communication, emotional safety, and trust, he provides ongoing support to promote an enduring culture of learning and personal discovery between members. Donnel has authored chapters for two international handbooks, by SAGE (2017) and Routledge (in press), on the topic of familial mentoring (mentoring that takes place between family members). He regularly speaks at national and international conferences on topics related to behavior, education, and mentoring.

Donnel has lived in Hawaii since 1997, and currently resides on the island of Oahu with his wife and young son. He is an active member of the watersport community and enjoys finding ways to integrate performance and sport psychology into his work with clients. He graduated from Chaminade University in 2003 with a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology and is currently a PhD Candidate at University of Hawaii, Manoa in the Department of Educational Psychology with a cognate in organizational behavior. His PhD research focuses on mentoring between fathers and adult sons.
